Renting a Car in Sarajevo: A Guide for International Visitors
Visiting Bosnia from abroad? Here's what international visitors need to rent and drive in Sarajevo: licence and IDP rules, driving on the right, automatic cars, and local support.
Visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina from abroad and thinking of renting a car? It is the easiest way to see the country, and the practical side is simple once you know a few things. Here is what international visitors need to rent and drive in Sarajevo: your documents, whether you need an International Driving Permit, what the roads are like, and how we make arrival easy.
Do you need an International Driving Permit?
You need a valid passport and your national driving licence. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended for everyone, and it is required if your licence is not written in the Latin alphabet, for example licences in Arabic or Cyrillic script. An IDP is inexpensive and issued in your home country before you travel, so it is worth getting to avoid any issue at pickup or a police check. If you are unsure, message us and we will confirm what applies to you.
Which side of the road, and what are the roads like?
Bosnia drives on the right, the same as most of Europe, the Gulf, Turkey and the region, so the driving side will feel familiar to most visitors. City streets in Sarajevo are busy, and the scenic routes into the mountains are winding, so an easy, comfortable car helps.
Automatic or manual?
Most international visitors prefer an automatic, and it is the more comfortable choice on Bosnia's hilly roads and in city traffic. Automatics are in high demand, especially in summer, so book early. See the difference in our automatic vs manual guide.
Travelling as a family or a group?
For families and groups with luggage, a family or SUV vehicle gives more space and comfort for longer routes. Child seats can be arranged, just ask when you book.
